1. The Gornergrat Cogwheel Experience
Inaugurated in 1898, the Gornergrat Bahn was Switzerland's first fully electrified cogwheel railway. Leaving Zermatt station, it snakes steadily upward through scented larch forests and over dramatic viaducts, ascending nearly 1,500 vertical meters to arrive at the 3,089m Gornergrat observatory.
From the sun terrace, visitors are treated to an unmatched panorama: the Gorner Glacier (the second-largest glacier system in the Alps), the Dufourspitze (Switzerland’s highest peak at 4,634m), and the majestic eastern and northern flanks of the Matterhorn.
The Classic Riffelsee Mirror Trek
Step 1: Take the Gornergrat train up to the summit platform at 3,089m for early morning morning light.
Step 2: Ride down one stop (or hike down 25 minutes) to Rotenboden station.
Step 3: Walk 5 minutes down to the Riffelsee alpine lake. On still mornings before 10:00 AM, the calm lake surface reflects an exact, mirror-image inverted portrait of the Matterhorn.
2. Matterhorn Glacier Paradise: Europe's Highest Cable Car
Ascending to 3,883 meters, the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise cable car carries explorers to the highest mountain station in Europe. Here, visitors can explore the Glacier Palace carved 15 meters deep into the permanent ice, walk onto the 360-degree viewing platform looking into Italy's Valle d'Aosta, and ski 365 days a year on the Theodul Glacier.
3. The Historic "Hinterdorf" Quarter
In the center of Zermatt, step back into the 16th century within the Hinterdorf (Old Village). Over 30 traditional Valais storehouses (Stadel) and barns stand preserved on circular stone pillars topped with flat slate discs (*Mäuseplatten*), an ancient architectural innovation designed to prevent mice and rats from entering grain stores.
